Wade In The Water is a installation that examines two perspectives of the Strange Fruit. Akin to the Negro spiritual, the installation highlights the haunting violence lurking, yet accompanied by the beautiful melodic vocals of the song. In a space covered in dirt, on one end, there is a Thanksgiving-like dinner table for the audience to sit down and consume. From left to right on the dinner table, Sex Workers, Black Elites, Exceptional Black, Working Class, and Prisoners are plated Strange Fruit offerings that evoke erie discomfort. Yet on the other end, a shimmering water reservoir cradles the floating fruit. As the audience engages in the fruit, the water slowly rocks the forms and washes over its odd mangled body. Together, both sides of the installation tell a dual story of the Strange Fruit, similar to the song, one equally full of horror as healing.
